Turning foreclosed houses into modern, affordable homes

When local home foreclosures began intensifying in 2007, our professionals moved into action with our partners. Together, we secured grants of $600,000 from the Paul and Phyllis Fireman Foundation, $600,000 from the state Department of Housing and Community Development and $100,000 from Mayor Harrington. The Rockland Trust Company also committed financing of $1,500,000. These funds are now being used to buy six vacant, foreclosed multi-family homes, rehabilitate them and rent the homes to 18 Brockton families in need.

By spring 2009, we had rehabilitated four triple-decker homes. Read the full Rescuing foreclosed houses story here.

Staff development initiative continues

Our staff development trainings for all departments continued throughout 2008 and early 2009. This internal initiative will continue to foster continual professional development improvement for BHA team members.

Initiatives

We modernize triple-deckers like this by
rehabilitating interior space and installing energy-efficient HVAC systems.

The BHA is a proactive housing authority.   We both lead and collaborate with other agencies to implement programs that promote the availability and safety of affordable housing and that help residents improve their quality of life and move to self-sufficiency.   Some of the many initiatives in which BHA is or has been involved include:

  • The ongoing development of affordable single-family homes that working Brockton families can rent or own, and that help bring about neighborhood revitalization
  • After-school education programs and summer programs; for example, a summer karate clinic offered to kids in collaboration with the Brockton Police Department
  • Modernization of BHA developments on an ongoing basis
  • Resident hiring programs that provide jobs at BHA for our residents
  • Resident governance programs that provide residents with a means to influence BHA policies and programs
  • Assistance and support directed to elderly and disabled residents provided by our professional Service Coordinators
  • Our Family Self Sufficiency program that helps BHA residents gain knowledge and skills to improve education and earning power, and ultimately lead independent lives
  • Internal initiatives that include staff development and technology improvements
  • Collaborative initiatives with government and private organizations that help improve housing and financing availability
  • Safety initiatives that include neighborhood crime watch programs, community policing programs and security system upgrades
