Communication and security systems initiative

Our MIS Department undertook several initiatives in 2007 that have enhanced BHA information and security capabilities. The department:

• Consolidated the BHA's three software systems into one in order to boost overall efficiency, enable easier user training, and provide easier documentation and reporting capabilities
• Improved BHA network reliability and speed by partitioning our WAN into five separate subnets
• Enhanced tech support to employees by installing a remote support system
• Improved security by replacing alarm systems at offices and residences across the city
• Added two devices to automatically and continuously back up files -- further safeguarding critical BHA data

Staff development initiative

We conducted a series of trainings in late 2007 and early 2008 to foster continual improvement for all team members at the BHA. Middle managers trained leadership, conflict resolution, motivation and decision making. Training for front-line staff members was devoted to customer service. Maintenance staff members received mechanical trainings.   Trained for senior staff members focused on leadership, communication, evaluation and staff development.

Initiatives to improve lives of residents  

In 2007 and 2008, Resident Services improved services, management procedures and staff skills through a number of initiatives. The department:

• Developed a three-way communication program in conjunction with service coordinators and asset managers to optimize service delivery
• Together with asset managers began planning implementation of a new mandated federal property management system
• Director Allyne Pecevich worked on a number of special projects, such as the Fireman/ Department of Housing and Community Development Project; the Legacy Project, art projects at Crescent Court and Roosevelt Heights, the After School Program and several community outreach initiatives
• Collaborated with the staff development team and Attorney Thomas L. Plouffe to conduct a series of staff trainings

In partnership with the Department of Mental Health, we selected our Belair Tower site for an eight-apartment special needs housing project. With planning complete, construction of the new $1.3 million residence is set for summer 2008.

Home building initiative   

The Economic Development team built three homes in 2007 as part of the Welcome Home Program, adding to our supply of homes available for qualified BHA residents to purchase.
