Workforce development program

In 2009, the BHA expanded its successful workforce development program.

This program is modeled after a requirement of Section 3 of the Housing and Urban Development Act. The diligence and effort of our workforce development employees are evident every time you visit one of our properties. The grounds are well kept, the floors sparkle, and the glass shines. One of the most rewarding aspects of the program is the appreciation expressed by our residents about how well their buildings are kept.

The goals of the program are local economic development and individual self-sufficiency. The BHA workforce development program enables our residents to work toward self sufficiency. It offers them the opportunity to get back into the workforce, build a work history and gain a positive reference when applying for full-time positions outside the housing authority. Currently, the BHA employs 15 residents for 18-hour-per-week jobs devoted to cleaning the interiors and exteriors of our developments. Although the primary purpose of the program is not to move toward full-time employment with the BHA, several of the program's employees have done just that. Uniquely, the BHA enhances the attractiveness of its program beyond the opportunity for full-time employment by pairing part-time workers with BHA mentors.

The mentoring relationship has proven highly beneficial in helping residents with little or no work experience to transition to a life centered on self reliance.

A day in the life of an Asset Manager

Asset managers interact with residents on a daily basis more than any other BHA staff members. While not really news, we'd like to offer a snapshot of the asset manager's important role at our agency.

Those only vaguely familiar with the role of an asset manager probably imagine a somewhat dry job managing daily operations, physical upkeep and rents at public housing residences. More...
