Earning HUD recognition

Rental Assistance earned HUD's High Performer status in 2008 -- the 5th consecutive year that the department has achieved the distinction. Certainly figuring into the HUD auditors' assessment were successes such as the transition by four families in the department's Homeownership Program from public assistance to homeownership, and the addition of a new family to the program. Rental Assistance also added five rental homes to its rolls designated for individuals with mental challenges.

With its effectiveness well-documented, the department also met with the towns of Abington and Stoughton to help them in achieving full occupancy in their programs, and worked toward increasing the Project Based program.

Section 8

Section 8 is a HUD-funded rental subsidy program designed to help low-income families rent housing in the private market. The BHA's Section 8 Program is provided through our Rental Assistance Department. This popular program, which nearly always has a waiting list, is comprised of three subprograms.

Housing Choice Voucher Program

Vouchers are portable rent subsidies that can be used by a family nearly anywhere within the United States and its territories.

Certificates Program

In 1999, federal regulations converted most Certificates to Housing Choice Vouchers; however, families in the Project Based Program (site-based assistance) remain under Certificate regulations.

Homeownership Program

The Homeownership Program enables participants to buy a home, using Section 8 subsidies for mortgage payments and other homeownership costs.
