HUD recognition

Rental Assistance, which manages the Section 8 rental assistance program as well as several other programs, distinguished itself in 2007 by earning High Performer Status from HUD after a thorough audit by the federal agency. Our rental team in 2007 also made 10 additional housing units available in the Project Based Program and increased housing units in the state's Department of Mental Health Program from eight to 18, thus providing more opportunities for low income families and those with developmental disabilities.

Section 8

Section 8 is a HUD-funded rental subsidy program designed to help low-income families rent housing in the private market. The BHA's Section 8 Program is provided through our Rental Assistance Department. This popular program, which nearly always has a waiting list, is comprised of three subprograms.

Housing Choice Voucher Program

Vouchers are portable rent subsidies that can be used by a family nearly anywhere within the United States and its territories.

Certificates Program

In 1999, federal regulations converted most Certificates to Housing Choice Vouchers; however, families in the Project Based Program (site-based assistance) remain under Certificate regulations.

Homeownership Program

The Homeownership Program enables participants to buy a home, using Section 8 subsidies for mortgage payments and other homeownership costs.
