Family Self Sufficiency

As of spring 2009, our FSS program had 49 participants working on educational, career and homeownership goals.

One participant had graduated from the program and bought a home in Brockton. Another four were pre-qualified for mortgages and were house hunting. Eight were enrolled in post-secondary education. Remarkably, given the tough job market, three found employment in the first half of 2009.

Our Family Self Sufficiency program plays a crucial role within our Resident Services department. The goal: independent living. We proactively encourage families to improve their incomes and lives through sub-programs such as the "The More You Learn, The More You Earn." Programs under the Family Self Sufficiency umbrella provide residents with knowledge, motivation and the practical skills that will enable them to seek job training, attend school, develop personally, earn more and handle finances effectively. For example, a participant might learn how to:

  • Write a resume
  • Apply for a mortgage
  • Save for a home down payment
  • Interview for a job
  • Get job training
  • Apply for financial aid for college

Over the years we have helped numerous families leave government assistance to either rent or own their own home.
